About us

Sisters of the Blessed Virgin is an apostolic religious institute with a 400-year legacy. They honour Virgin Mary under the title of “Immaculate Mother of God”. As part of their vocation and mandate of the church, they find ways and means to save the souls of the youth who attend their educational institutions. The foundress of the institute, Mother Lucia Perotti was born on 18th November 1568 in Cremona, a noblewoman with a generous and splendid nature. She felt a great desire to change the course of society in her own time. To fulfil her desire for revolution, Lucia Perotti settled in a small house near Sant’ Omobono Church with her first companions, Costanza, Teodora,Ottavia and Reina, on the 6th of May 1610.In the early days of the institution, she was supported by Jesuit Father Giovanni Mellino. In 1618, he contributed significantly to the draft of the first rules (the constitution) by accompanying the institution from the first decades of its life.

Her sensitivity and courage led her to embark on a mission to educate young girls in Cremona. “Do everything out of love for God” was chosen as the congregation’s motto based on St. Paul’s teaching. Gradually, Blessed Virgin Sisters have spread their mission to three continents. Among those missions, the Sri Lankan province has reached a milestone of 70 years, bringing life to the church mission for abandoned children.
