History of Blessed Virgin Sisters,
Province of Sri Lanka

On the 01st of December 1951, the two Rev. Mothers started the voyage to Colombo (Ceylon). They arrived at the Port of Colombo on the 25th of December 1951 and were welcomed by an Italian sister of Franciscan Missionaries of Mary.

As for the wish of the Holy Bishop of kandy, Rt. Rev. Dr. Bernard Regno, they stayed as the guests of the sisters until March 1952. The Bishop wanted us to this mission (taking care of the orphan children and the infants) offered us a house at Peradeniya, but it was not empty, because of that we could not occupy that place. At the end of March 1952, the Bishop got us a small ‘Bungalow’ (with an annex and a hut of wood) which was more suitable for the religious and the orphan children which was given by the good shepherd sisters, Kandy.  In this small place they prepared all the necessary things to welcome the children. On the 24th May 1952 at 5.00 p.m. the first two children were brought to them, one baby boy of 7 months and a baby girl of 14 months from the hospital of Kandy and So, started the mission for the orphans.

After few days Bishop Regno administered the Sacrament of Baptism to those two infants and they were given the names ‘Anne Mary’ and ‘Bernard’. All appreciated the Mother Foundress, the Bishop, the Mother General and Mrs. Anna Maria Fernando. Then started slowly arriving of the children to our house. The bishop was more concern on giving us a more suitable place which has more space and friendly atmosphere for Children. The divine providence intervened and a house at Gampola become empty and available for us which is a property of the diocese of Kandy. On the 15th October 1952 the house of Gampola was given to us and children together with the sisters and others arrived at Gampola. This house of Gampola became the Mother House of our Mission of Ceylon!
